Last night on 60 minutes was a story about the popularity of a movement that advocates for determining our death date. This movement has been given the name death with dignity. According to Webster's, dignity is defined as: a way of appearing or behaving that suggests seriousness and self-control & the quality of being worthy of honor or respect.
As we take a step back and look at our culture, DESIRE FOR CONTROL is something we are grasping for at both ends of the spectrum of life. We want to determine which unborn children are worthy of life and when our last breaths should be. In simple terms...We want to be GOD. This has been our struggle since the garden. If God is really God in our lives, we must give up the one thing that we hold so dear, our control.
One of my favorite things about going on a backpacking trip in the mountains is this, you cannot help but realized your lack of control. Have you ever watched a storm roll through the valley? Who determines its path? Have you ever been caught in a snow storm in August, unable to press on through the whiteout? Can you will the snow to stop? The mountains rise around you...The Wildness of God is untamed. The wilderness screams of the glory and majesty of God. HE is GREAT and Worthy of PRAISE.
The peace that we long for can only be found when we understand who is in control and give our lives to Him. So often in Scripture we are reminded of this fact.
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.” John 14:27
“Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
- What would it look like to give up control to the creator of the universe?
- What would your life look like if you honored God with your time, not yourself?
- How would your outlook on life change if you truly believed that God is good, not matter what the outcome might be?
- If God is not your god, then who/what is?
